Float Tips
What to know before you go
Party Float tip: This is the Huzzah's natural habitat. On summer Saturdays the Huzzah Junction area turns into a massive floating tailgate. The narrow twists and root wads create natural social bottlenecks where groups pile up — which is half the fun. Come ready for water gun fights and expect to meet people.
Chill Float tip: The Huzzah on a summer weekend is not a quiet float. If you want the same crystal-clear water without the crowd, put in on a weekday or float its twin sister the Courtois Creek (pronounced CO-tuh-way) just a few miles away.
Segments
Where to put in, where to take out
Recommended stretches with mileage and notes. Best segment to start with is highlighted in the segment notes below.
Huzzah Valley area~6 mi
The primary float corridor with the most outfitter infrastructure. The tight bends and root wads create the social bottlenecks the Huzzah is famous for. Short enough for a half-day, long enough to feel like a real float.
Lower Huzzah to Meramec confluence
The Huzzah flows into the Meramec near Sullivan. The lower stretch is wider and calmer. For an ambitious day or overnight, start high on the Courtois and merge into the Huzzah, then finish at the Meramec — a best-of-both-worlds route.
Must-See Stops
Springs, caves, and bluffs to look for
Huzzah Junction
The famous social hotspot on the river where groups pile up at a natural bottleneck. On summer Saturdays this becomes an impromptu floating party. Plan to spend time here.
Root wad bottlenecks
The narrow channel and frequent downed timber create pinch points where groups naturally converge. These are the social glue of the Huzzah float experience — and the main reason to bring a patch kit.
Courtois confluence
Where the Courtois Creek joins the Huzzah. If you started on the quiet Courtois, this is where the energy picks up. A natural transition point on the best-of-both overnight route.
